PLACE NAMES

Villemur-sur-Tarn

Villemur-sur-Tarn, literally Villemur on Tarn, is a commune in the Haute-Garonne department in southwestern France.

THis is a thousand-year-old medieval city of character, all in brick, nestled between the Tarn river and its hillsides, the city has everything to seduce you.

A remarkable architectural heritage with its 12th century defense tower and its 17th century King's attics, both steeped in history and listed as historical heritage. Here, the alleys with evocative names evoke the eventful past of the city: the old fortifications, the passage of Henri de Navarre, a famous battle during the Wars of Religion, the terrible flood of the Tarn in 1930, the industrial epic Brusson...

Labeled Station Verte, it is a place where it is good to live and stay with a rich and diversified calendar of events and outdoor leisure activities.

You will enjoy relaxing along the banks of the river, swimming there in summer, taking a bike ride on the greenway, admiring the landscape and the view of the valley by gaining height on the hiking trails and taste local products.

Ideally located in the heart of the Toulouse-Albi-Montauban triangle, it is an ideal starting point for exploring the region and a green lung where it is good to recharge your batteries in generous nature.

From its prestigious past, it retains its historic monuments: the defense tower, a masterpiece of military architecture from the 12th century listed as a Historic Monument, the Roy's attics dating from the 17th century and listed in the Inventory of Historic Monuments and the admirable frescoes by the Toulouse painter Bénezet in the choir of the Église Saint-Michel (19th century). The Town Hall, rebuilt after the flood of 1930, and having received the Remarkable Contemporary Architecture label, also deserves a close look.

Guided tours of the city are regularly organized by the Tourist Office.

Villemur is also crossed by the Voie Verte which connects Bessières to Bressols (30 km), the opportunity to take a nice bike ride through the surrounding countryside.
