Since 1st January 2016, mainland France has been divided into 12 administrative regions, in addition to the territorial collectivity of Corsica, and with five regions located overseas. The regions are further subdivided into 101 départments, which are numbered mainly alphabetically. This number is used in postal codes and vehicle number plates amongst others.
The mainland regions and Corsica are each further subdivided into departments, ranging in number from 2 to 13 per region for the metropolitan regions; the overseas regions technically consist of only one department each.
